UpDate (2024)
Nominations and exhibitions
In 2023, the world became acquainted with the concept of a neural network. The Midjourney and ChatGPT apps burst into our lives. State Institute of Russian Language named after. A. S. Pushkin recognized “neural network” as the word of 2023 in Russia. In the UK, the Collins English Dictionary named AI (artificial intelligence) the word of the year, and the Cambridge Dictionary named the word hallucinate, which in the context of AI technologies is now translated as “to produce false information.”
As an artist myself, I use AI-based applications. But how safe is this for me as a creative person? At what point will my ideas become not mine, and instead of providing ordinary information, the neural network will already influence decision-making?
My project “UpDate” is a reflection on technology using a specific story as an example: the safety of AI for people through a girl’s ordinary day. My work is a film noir style that refers to moral ambiguity and the anxiety of an unknown future. The word “UpDate” is a play on two words: date and update. How will our lives be renewed after a date with AI?
The horizontal format of the book echoes the film stock. We are observing an ordinary date between a woman and a man. But this visual narrative contains clues to hitherto unsolved mathematical equations, a test for the stability of a replicant, a message encrypted in binary code, a real industrial product for Midjourney.
The image of the male hero is a collective image of my contemporaries: overwhelmed with doubts, located between the two worlds of order and hausa. Confused and without support. The external image of the heroine is also metaphorical — she is dangerous and attractive. Her final words were generated by ChatGPT. I leave the viewer with questions about how much AI can or perhaps already controls it.
